Jimmie Johnson emerged victorious in the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) on July 26, 2009. Mark Martin finished second, and Tony Stewart ended in third place. At the conclusion of the race Martin was leading NASCAR's Sprint Cup Series with 4 race victories this season, Johnson had 3, and Stewart racked up his second.

The 34th Annual IHSAA Girls' Basketball State Tournament will take place Saturday, March 7, at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. From the eight high school teams that will participate, four will emerge as Indiana girls' basketball champions: one in each of four classes: 4A, 3A, 2A, and A. Class is based on school size, with 4A schools being the largest.

The trial for Helio Castroneves, who is charged with income tax defraud and evasion, began with jury selection March 2 in a Miami, Florida, federal courtroom. Castroneves is a two-time champion of the Indianapolis 500, and a celebrity champion of the popular TV series Dancing with the Stars. The trial is expected to last up to six weeks. If found guilty, Castroneves could face up to 30 years in prison.
