Head back to Vermont Street, and turn right (west) on Vermont to the Red Brick Wall, located on the northeast corner of the intersection at Vermont and East streets. What’s so special about a red brick wall, you ask? This one, constructed around 1896, surrounded the Home for the Aged Poor, which was operated by the Little Sisters of the Poor for nearly a century - from 1878 to 1968. It extends a block north to Michigan Street and continues nearly a block east on Michigan. Today, it serves as a garden wall encompassing townhomes that were developed between 1983 and 1985.

For the final destination on our tour, head left (south) on East Street two blocks to New York Street. Our last stop is the Lockerbie Square United Methodist Church at 237 N. East St.

This structure, which has operated under six names since its construction in 1882-83, was originally the German Evangelical Church. It features a “round arch style,” which was prevalent in the Germans’ homeland during the 1830s and '40s. With its tall, spiraling steeple, the church is a beautiful architectural testament to the spirit of the many generations of people who have inhabited Lockerbie Square.
