Celebrate the Day with these Fun Events!

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, there are a lot of educational and fun things to do. This year, these special events are happening across the city. Be sure to check out all the museums and attractions that are offering free admission on MLK Day!

"Living in the Footsteps of a King"

Join former Indianapolis Colts linebacker Gary Brackett for a special event at the Indiana Statehouse. Brackett will deliver the keynote address for the for the "Living in the Footsteps of a King" program at the Indiana Statehouse. The program will also feature the Indiana Civil Rights Commission and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Commission, plus a performance by the Broad Ripple Magnet School Golden Singers Choir. The event is free, though space is limited.

When: January 17; 12:30 p.m.

IUPUI 44th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Dinner

This unique dinner honors the legacy of Dr. King and also is a chance for over 600 IUPUI students, faculty and community members to network and engage in dialogue. Bobby Seale, a co-founder of the Black Panther Party will be the guest speaker. Cost is $25 for IUPUI students; $65 for faculty and staff; $75 for the community.

Madame Walker Presidential Inauguration Viewing & Breakfast

The Madame Walker Theatre Center will stream the inauguration ceremony live for free inside the historic 937-seat theatre as part of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Program. Prior to the program, there will be a free community breakfast at the Indianapolis Urban League (777 Indiana Ave.). This will be followed by a “Freedom Walk” back to the Madame Walker Theatre Center. at 11 a.m. Prior to the program, there will be a FREE community breakfast at the starting at 9:30 a.m. at 10:30 a.m. Visit for more information.

Dr. King Celebration at IPS Crispus Attucks Museum

Experience the newly enhanced Civil Rights exhibit, "The Man and the Movement" and view the video documentary, "Legacy of King" at the Crispus Attucks Museum. The museum will host a live showing of President Obama's inauguration with light refreshments.

When: January 21; 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Harlem Globetrotters

Enjoy the crazy and hilarious antics of the Harlem Globetrotters. Enjoy skillful and fun basketball with the entire family. Tickets start at $25.

Volunteer Opportunity at Indy Reads Books

If you're looking for a chance to give back on MLK Day, consider volunteering at the newest downtown bookstore. Indy Reads supports adult literacy. Adults and kids are invited to help organize shelves, stamp books and sort through donations at the Mass Ave bookstore.
