The kids are out of school on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and that means many parents take the day off as well. Have no fear - you don't have to spend the day trapped inside. There are a ton of free events throughout the city. This compiled list will give you a few choices about how to spend the day.

The Children's Museum of Indianapolis

Celebrate the life, dream and legacy of the late Dr. King at The Children's Museum of Indianapolis January 20 from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. The museum will offer all guests special entertainment throughout the day with free admission! Parking is always free at the Children's Museum as well.

Conner Prairie

Step back in time with a visit to Conner Prairie. Enjoy both indoor and outdoor fun at the museum in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Outdoor fun includes visits to the Conner homestead, the Lenape Indian camp and the Golden Eagle Inn. Indoors, enjoy storytelling about the life of Sojourner Truth, in addition to other games and activities. The museum is offering free admission that day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians & Western Art

Celebrate MLK Jr. Day by immersing yourself in the culture and art of the American West. The Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians & Western Art is open that day from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Visit the West in the RB Annis Western Family Experience. See how four families live in the West and walk into a Navajo Hogan or climb aboard a true-to-life stagecoach. Admission is free for each canned good donated to Gleaners Food Bank. Free parking is available in the underground parking garage in front of the Indiana State Museum.

IMAX Theater

The IMAX Theater, located at the Indiana State Museum is offering a free movie in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Experience “Journey to the South Pacific 3D” for free until 5 p.m. This family-friendly documentary narrated by Academy Award®-winning actress Cate Blanchett follows a young island boy named Jawi on a quest around tropical West Papua. Admission is free for each canned good donated to Gleaners Food Bank. Free parking is available in the underground parking garage in front of the Indiana State Museum. Free tickets are available beginning at 10 a.m. (at the Box Office) on a first-come, first-served basis.  Screenings are at 10:15 am, 11:30 am, 12:45 am, 2 pm, 3:15 pm, and 4:45 pm.

Indiana Historical Society

The Indiana Historical Society will offer free admission January 20, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Enjoy hands-on activities, historic gym glasses featuring 1930s calisthenics and two special civil rights exhibits – Freedom: A History of Us and The Legacy of Civil Rights in Indianapolis. Storyteller Deborah Asante performs at 1:30 p.m.

Indiana State Museum

If you haven't been to the Indiana State Museum, this is the perfect opportunity to visit for free. Visit "Ice Age Giants: The Mystery of Mammoths and Mastodons". The Indiana State Museum has been hard at work for decades – discovering, digging, studying, and preserving the remains of mammoths, mastodons, and other Ice Age animals.  Or attend musical, dance and spoken word performances and make specially themed crafts.Join the Indiana State Museum in celebrating the life and legacy of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with music, dance and theatre performances, poetry readings, art making activities and film viewings throughout the day. Indianapolis Museum of Art

The Indianapolis Museum of Art celebrates the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. from 11 a.m.- 4 p.m. with free admission. Guests will enjoy family art-making and activities, as well as a featured community art project, entitled One and All, led by Theater of Inclusion. All activities and parking are free for the day.

Indianapolis Zoo

The animals at the Indianapolis Zoo are often more active in cooler weather. Take the opportunity to see the animals and enjoy the smaller crowds. Highlights of the day include the free dolphin shows, indoor shark petting and warming up in the Deserts Dome. The zoo is open that day from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Admission is free for each canned good donated to Gleaners Food Bank. Parking at the zoo is also free that day.

NCAA Hall of Champions

Learn more about NCAA® Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) in a new exhibit.  Featured in the display are many well-known former student-athletes, coaches, and traditions that showcase the athletic and academic successes of HBCUs.  Kids of all ages can participate in fitness clinics with former and current NCAA® student-athletes from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.  There will also be opportunities to win official NCAA® merchandise throughout the day. Victory Field

Victory Field, Health care professionals from Wishard Hospital will offer blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol screenings at Victory Field on MLK Jr. Day. Body Mass Index screenings will also be offered, along with healthy advice regarding nutrition. The health screenings will take place between 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Participants will receive two tickets to the Indianapolis Indians game on April 10, 2012. Admission is free for each canned good donated to Gleaners Food Bank. Free parking is available in the underground parking garage in front of the Indiana State Museum.
