Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday held on May 5, but is not the country's Independence Day, contrary to popular belief. Mexico's Independence Day is actually celebrated on September 16. Cinco de Mayo originated as a celebration of the Mexican army's victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín. In the United States, it is primarily recognized as a day of national pride - much like St. Patrick's Day is to the Irish (or anyone who likes a reason to celebrate).
Now that you've had a brief history lesson, it's time to plan a night out to celebrate. Indianapolis is full of great Mexican restaurants - both local and chain. The list below includes some of the most popular and authentic in the city.
