No Ordinary Silo

Monday August 25, 2008

"Fishers Project Silo 2008" is an endeavor by the Fishers Arts Council to transform what some might consider an eyesore — an abandoned, dilapidated, concrete silo — into a public work of art. The silo has been part of the town’s landscape for centuries and represents an important theme in the history of the area. However, it’s not quite in keeping with the downtown scene of Fishers today, which is dominated by government buildings and quaint commercial establishments. That’s soon to change.

The initiative calls for the silo to be rid of existing iron and given a fresh coat of paint. It will then be topped with imaginative lighting to spotlight the pièce de résistance: three murals, each nearly 40 feet high by 17 feet wide.

Where will this artwork come from? The council will conduct yearly contests to ferret out the best and brightest artists in the town and the region. The winning entries will be displayed on the silo. As Charlotte the spider might spin in her web, that’s “one special silo.”
